After seeing a strange-looking animal in his yard, a man posted photos on social media trying to figure out what it was. The animal looked like a rabbit, but it had black horns all over its face. It turns out the rabbit had a viral disease.

The rabbit has what is called cottontail rabbit papillomavirus, or CRPV. According to petmd, CRPV is a viral disease that results in the malignant tumors. The disease is spread by biting insects (mosquitoes and ticks) and can infect wild or domestic pet rabbits.

The treatment is surgery to remove the growths. Often times, if the growths are not removed, the animal will have a hard time eating and will starve to death. The best way to prevent your pet rabbit from getting this disease is to limit exposure to mosquitoes and ticks.

Dogs can also be affected by a strain of papilloma virus, called Canine Oral Papilloma Virus.

This disease can cause growths as well. This type of papilloma virus is often spread by biting insects known as arthropods, more specifically mosquitoes and ticks. To diagnose the disease, the nodules will have to be removed.
