He’s the man behind the world’s hottest pepper—the “Carolina Reaper.” For the past three decades, Currie has been pushing the limits of the Scoville scale—breeding hotter and hotter peppers.

The Carolina Reaper pepper was accepted and declared by the governing Guinness World Record body to be the new heat champ. Grown by Ed Currie of the Pucker Butt Pepper Company, the Carolina Reaper will soon be the talk of the fiery foods community.

Congratulations to Ed for this outstanding achievement! Here is the official press release announcing the Carolina Reaper as the new Guinness World Record for the Hottest Chile Pepper.

The official Guinness World Record heat level is 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), according to tests conducted by Winthrop University in South Carolina. The figure is an average for the tested batch; the hottest individual pepper was measured at 2.2 million SHU.
