Scientists in Mexico are puzzling over a giant fissure that has split the ground in the northern part of the country.this is nothing at all to do with earthquake activity, as many headlines have suggested.
The earth has not simply “split open”, as the ground on both side of the crack has stayed exactly where it started. This huge crack in Mexico seems to have appeared overnight. The cause may have something to do with the way farmers obtain water.
However, geologists at the University of Sonora have blamed the collapse of the land on an underground stream.
Farm workers and vehicles have been forced to go around the area due to the unstable ground. Another crack was reported to have opened up in same area.
