If you are one of those who are Lovin’ McDonalds fries, there is a great chance you might change your mind after reading about all the toxic ingredients that they are made of. A discovery of McDonald’s french-fry process explains how the many ingredients in them can cause brain damage, autoimmune disease, and even cancer.

Grant Imahara, of Mythbusters fame, had recently gone to a McDonald’s fry factory to discover what McDonald’s fries contain.

During this visit, Imahara’s “reverse-engineering” discovered that these fries are made of 15 different ingredients, some of which are quite toxic. The ingredients are:

  • Potatoes
  • Canola Oil
  • Soybean Oil
  • Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
  • Natural Beef Flavor
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat
  • Hydrolyzed Milk
  • Citric Acid
  • Dimethylpolysiloxane
  • Dextrose
  • Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate
  • Salt
  • Canola Oil
  • Corn Oil
  • Soybean Oil
  • Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
  • TBHQ (Tertiary butylhydroquinone)
  • Citric Acid
  • Dimethylpolysiloxane

The main dangerous ingredients are Dimethylpolysiloxane, TBHQ, and Hydrogenated Soybean Oil.

Dimethylpolysiloxane is an ingredient that you can find in fish tanks, hair conditioners and also silly putty. It can sometimes contain formaldehyde – known chemical that’s mostly linked to brain damage, allergies, autoimmune disorders, and even cancer.

TBHQ, or tertiary butylhydroquinone, is a phenol which is used to prevent deterioration in food, but it also found in perfumes and biodiesel.

Hydrogenated soybean oil has been looked at badly as it has unhealthy effects on people who consume it often. The researchers from the Harvard school of Public Health and the Brigham and Women Hospital in Boston stated that about 100,000 cardiac deaths, that occur every year in the United States, could be prevented “if people replaced trans fat with healthier non-hydrogenated polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oils.”

The release of this information for the public is part of what McDonalds calls the “Our Food. Your Questions” campaign, which is an initiative to make nutritional information more available for customers.

“After listening carefully to our customers and identifying some of the challenges we were up against, McDonald’s created a transparent line of communication via the interactive, online Q&A platform,” the company said in a statement to Global News.

Although McDonald’s has been making their ingredients information more transparent due to customer demand, they have made no indication of any plans on changing their ingredients in the near future.
