The largest container ship in the world launched earlier this month. It’s nearly the size of four football fields. Here’s how container ships got so huge and transformed the global economy.
MSC Oscar represents marine engineering on a truly massive scale. It and its sister ships are the largest container ships in the world. Owned and operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company and Panamanian-registered, MSC Oscar was ordered, built and delivered into service within little more than a year.
Christened on 8 January 2015, the MSC Oscar assumed the title from the CSCL Globe inaugurated in November 2014. Was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and classed by DNV GL, is 395.4 m long and 59 m wide.
The ship, registered in Panama, was inaugurated on January 8th 2015 and joins the Albatross service later that month.
