These Ice Swimmers Battle Frozen Death with Every Stroke

High in the mountains of southern Africa, 15 swimmers compete in one of the most extreme—and chilling—races on earth.

With no wet suits or protection, they swim one kilometer in water that is cold enough to kill them. For these athletes, it’s not just a battle to the finish, every stroke is a battle to stay alive.

The International Ice Swimming Association is set out to keep world records with its vision to include Swimming as a category in the Winter Olympic Games and make it globally recognised sport.

The International Ice Swimming Association  was formed in 2009 by Ram Barkai together with his swimming mates (Andrew Chin, Toks Viviers, Ryan Stramrood and Kieron Palframan)with a vision to formalise swimming in icy water.
