Over time, odors can develop on the evaporator core since it is located in a dark, damp area of the vehicle. The evaporator core can be cleaned by filling a “misting” machine with cleaner.

The machine then creates a very fine mist that is distributed throughout the HVAC ducting, removing bacteria and odor as it passes through. The AC evaporator becomes wet as humid air is passed over its cool surface. Watch the video from Gary’s Tradition Auto for more info:
This wet enviroment is a good place for mold and mildew to grow and for dust and pollen to collect, finding their way back into the air system. Bacteria grow exceptionally well in this area, which becomes warm but still damp when you shut the car off.

This contamination should be cleaned regularly. The evaporator is typically hidden inside the vehicle’s dashboard and can be labor-intensive to replace, which then requires a full system recharge.
