A DIY air conditioner uses a fan to blow air either through a duct embedded in ice or through copper tubing suspended on the front of a fan. This simple setup is not only budget-friendly but also surprisingly effective in cooling an entire room during hot summer days. You’ll need a copper pipe (or tubing), a small water pump, plastic tubing, and some gas as refrigerant to fill the pipes.
So the way an air conditioner works is: A fan blows (warm) air across a heatsink to transfer the heat to the refrigerant. Cooled air is blown into the house. The refrigerant loops into a compressor, which increases the pressure (thus increasing the temperature of the refrigerant further). The compressed, warmed refrigerant passes through another heatsink and transfers some of that heat to the outside air. Warmed air is released outside the house as exhaust.

The refrigerant is then allowed to expand, lowering the pressure and thus the temperature. The effectiveness of this DIY AC will depend on the size of the copper coil, the temperature of the cooling medium, and the fan’s airflow. Disclaimer: Be careful using refrigerants like those in traditional ACs is not recommended for DIY projects due to safety and legal reasons.
