The huge mass that moved with the waves near the beaches of La Jolla, California only looked like an oil spill, but if you look carefully you’ll see it changes shape as the swimmers approach it.

This actually is an unusually large school of anchovies that for some reason moved into shallow waters off the coast. And if you thought this looked cool from up above, wait till you see the underwater footage. It’s fascinating to see how the school reacts in unison to avoid the swimmers.

At first glance it may look like an oil spill but it’s actually a massive aggregation of anchovy near Scripps Pier at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego in La Jolla, California. This footage was taken by Scripps staff and underwater by Scripps graduate students Julia Fiedler, Sean Crosby and Bonnie Ludka.
