Every year, anglers leave behind a trail of tackle victims that includes millions of birds, turtles, and other animals who suffer debilitating injuries after they swallow fishhooks or become entangled in fishing line. Wildlife rehabilitators say that discarded fishing tackle is one of the greatest threats to aquatic animals.
This is the incredible moment a man tackles a swan in a lake to free it from a deadly fish hook impaled in its leg. With pockets stuffed with bird feed, volunteer animal rescuer, Stefan Brockling, is about to attempt one of his most daring stunts yet in Grevenbroich, Germany, as he seeks to help the hindered fowl.
Notorious for their fierce, territorial nature, Stefan is tentative in his approach to the bird and its companion, before suddenly springing into action and jumping from the riverbank on top of the swan, dragging it out of the water. The officers removed the tangled fishing line, and the bird appeared to be fine.
Stefan said: “The longer the fish hook was there, the more life threatening it would’ve become.“Eventually the baby would not have been able to breath, so thankfully I just got there in time.”
