Tesla has introduced the Cybercab without a steering wheel or pedals leaving driving entirely at the whims of artificial intelligence. The vehicle will be fully autonomously controlled, and has no steering wheel or pedals.

While the demo rides on the premises of Warner Bros Studios were certainly impressive, it could take years before we’ll see some of them on public roads. Tesla plans to start the first tests in California and Texas in 2025.

The design is futuristic, with doors that open upward like butterfly wings and a small cabin with only enough space for two passengers. Musk said the cost of the Cybercab was expected by Tesla to be below US$30,000.

The company still faces significant regulatory hurdles and will need to earn customer trust. Tesla would need to deliver reliable self-driving technology before it could deploy robotaxis without steering wheels, and it’s not clear when or if that will happen.
