The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the aircraft. The “STOVL/HOOK” control instead engages conversion between normal and vertical flight. The F-35B can also perform vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL). Watch the video from SYG DESIGNWORKS for more info:

The F-35 has a wing-tail configuration with two vertical stabilizers canted for stealth. Flight control surfaces include leading-edge flaps, flaperons, rudders, and all-moving horizontal tails (stabilators); leading edge root extensions also run forwards to the inlets.

Using energy generated by the F-35’s single engine, a swiveling jet pipe capable of rotating 95 degrees in 2.5 seconds redirects the engine thrust downward, while additional lift fans beneath the cockpit and wings combine to produce 40,000 pounds of vertical thrust. The thrust is divided between an engine driven fan, the downward flexed jet-pipe & two “roll posts” — one near each wing-tip. This geometry gives the F-35B a stable, widely spaced 4-footed stance.//wikipedia
