The Atlas lion or black maned lion is a dangerous predator. This king is the biggest lion to ever exist today!!! Unlike other lions this beast has a thicker mane that also stretches in its belly.This population occurred in Barbary Coastal regions of Maghreb from the Atlas Mountains to Egypt and was eradicated following the spreading of firearms and bounties for shooting lions.
It lives in the Atlas Mountains and North Egypt. It is also the second most powerful cat living on today’s planet after the endangered siberian tiger.Fun fact: 95% of Barbarys in captivity are hybrids of modern lions of today so most of them are not true Barbary lions.
It is very rare to see a true Barbary in captivity but there’s a few!!The last recorded Barbary lion was shot in Morocco in 1942. The only Barbary lions left in the world are now found in zoos and are part of a global and collaborative breeding programme to ensure their future survival.
